August 12th, International Youth Day
International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12th of each year.
Established by the UN General Assembly on December 17th, 1999 at the invitation of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon from August 8-12, 1998.
While youth represent one quarter of the world labor force, it accounts for half of the unemployed. Labor markets are experiencing difficulties in securing stable employment with good prospects for young people with the exception of the highly skilled.
Today, there are almost 3 billion people under the age of 25. More than half of them live in poverty. Over 100 million children do not attend school. Every day about 30 thousand children are dying poverty and every day, seven young people are infected with HIV/AIDS.
UN Secretary-General called on the international community to recognize the interdependence of generations and deal with different ages together. It is also important to keep in mind that this day is a holiday of creativity and inspiration, energy and fervor, learning and self-assertion, love and romanticism!
